Roy Reid is a retired Bank Manager. Living in coastal towns for most of his life, he became an avid rock and surf angler, who was very involved in the administration of different Natal teams as well as competitive angling in South Africa.
On his retirement, he took up woodcarving as a hobby and carved different types of fish and sharks out of wood and aluminium.
However, it was during the year 2000 that his grandson gave him two illustrated books of the aircraft of World War 1 and World War 2. This sparked Roy’s interest in making wooden scale models of the aircraft he found in the books. In 2005, he took a stand at the Durban Air Show and for the next nine years sold his model aircraft there until it ceased operating in 2013.
He still continues to sell his artisan aircraft at selected markets and specialist shops in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands in South Africa. He also makes custom scale models on request. The especially hand-crafted wooden aircraft are intended for display purposes.
Roy Reid’s crafts are also available at The Ellenbird in Hilton 2 Quarry Road, Hilton, 3245
