Nathi Zondi is the artist and driving force behind Mzansi Handmade. His interest in crafting was kindled by helping his mom who made beadwork to sell on the Durban beachfront and was further developed by the African Art Centre. He has supplied various shops and galleries nationwide with his beaded rings as well as facilitated a number of art and craft skills development training sessions with the African Art Centre, Mninizo Trading and various craft organisations. He is a trustee to Phansi Museum and a qualified community project manager and assessor.
Mzansi Handmade was started with the aim of assisting artists and crafters who had received skills development training through a project conducted by Mninizo Trading together with The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform between 2010 and 2017. The project empowered almost 3800 artists and crafters throughout South Africa in the deepest rural areas of KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Eastern Cape.
Mzansi Handmade assists local artists with developing their products and production skills, with marketing and promoting their products as well as supplying them with raw materials. The organisation supplies craft shops and galleries with the artist’s products and takes their products to a variety of large exhibitions, craft events and markets. All income generated is distributed back to the artists accordingly.
