The Artist - Brian Harmer
The Artist – Brian Harmer is a retiree living in Howick. Born in Northern Rhodesia, his passion for drawing started at a young age. As a child, when Queen Elizabeth was visiting the then Rhodesia in 1953, he entered a competition to do a drawing which would be given to the Queen as a gift. He drew the golden royal carriage which was amongst those chosen for the Queen. We often wonder if his drawing adorns a wall somewhere in Buckingham Palace!!
Brian sketched informally for years for his children and grandchildren and it was only when he retired and was fortunate enough to stay in a game reserve outside Kimberly for 8 months that he perfected his technique and explored sketching wildlife. The result was magnificent. Brian really has a talent for detail and shading to get the look and proportion just right. From the long eyelashes of the zebra to the last wrinkle on the elephant’s bum, his love for wildlife really stands out through his sketches.
Brian has a range of products made from his sketches such as cards, postcards, canvas prints as well as an annual wildlife calendar.
