For reasons known only to itself, the old SA Defence Force trained me as a combat photographer in the 1960s. I never saw any combat, but left the army with a love of photography. With the advent of the digital era I’ve tried my hand at many aspects of photography, settling for being an all-rounder, a jack-of-all-trades. I enjoy “straight” work as much as I do art photography, my greatest pleasure being able to show the small things in our daily lives to those too busy to see them.
I live in Pietermaritzburg with Terri, my wife of fifty years and counting. Our son, Deryk, with his wife and daughter, are also in the city, while our daughter Shayne, an Epworth School old girl, lives in England with her husband and three daughters. Having grown up in the old Transvaal, Terri and I moved to Pietermaritzburg in 1971 and count ourselves Maritzburgers.
The world is a beautiful place despite the tragic things we see around us each day, and the camera is the perfect tool for filtering out the things that bring us down.
All of Doug’s prints are on archival canvas (with a non-fade guarantee of at least 30 years) and are coated and therefore cleanable. They are available in a variety of different sizes and will be delivered as rolled canvases. However, if you wish to order a non-standard size, or as a “stretched” canvas, then please contact us on email@example.com to arrange.
