It is as simple as packing plastic into a bottle!

When we save, segregate and pack plastics into bottles, we can make building blocks that can be reused over and over again. Together we can build green spaces that enrich our community and remove plastic from the biosphere. Together we can transition from plastic to ever greener harmony with Earth’s cycles.

Ecobricks enable us to take personal responsibility for our plastic.

An Ecobrick is a reusable building block created by packing clean and dry used plastic into a plastic bottle to a set density.

An Ecobrick is a plastic bottle packed to a set density with used, clean and dry plastic to achieve a building block that can be used over and over again. Ecobricks can also be packed with other non-biological un-recyclables that, uncontained, are toxic to the environment (i.e. styrofoam, wires, small batteries, etc.).  Ecobricks are used to make modular furniture, garden spaces, walls and even full-scale buildings.  Ecobricks are an exciting way that individuals, communities, and companies can start their immediate transition from plastic towards ever greener harmony with the Earth’s cycles.

Ecobricks are a stepping stone out of the old paradigm of ‘waste’ and ‘trash’.  Ecobricking gives value to what was once value-less.  Ecobricks are designed to leverage the longevity and durability of plastic, to create an indefinitely reusable, cradle to cradle, building block.  They are made by cleaning, drying and then packing plastic into a PET drinking bottle. This enables plastic to be kept out of the environment, and out of the ineffective industrial recycling system. Once packed solid (with a minimum density of 0.33g/ml) ecobricks can be used to build green spaces for our community, furniture for our homes, and many other practical applications.

This site and our Ecobrick Guides have been crafted to help you get started ecobricking, to assist the training others to ecobrick, and to establish best practices for the making and application of ecobricks.  Our goal is to empower you and your community with the know-how to make ecobricks and build with them.  Our GEA resources are the result of years of research, experimentation and trial and error around the world through the Global Ecobrick Alliance.

Around the world people are using ecobricks to build in a whole new way.  From indoor furniture, to gardens and parks, to structures — your imagination is the only limit!

Ecobricks are one of the few ways to effectively sequester plastic.  Ecobricks remove plastic from the biosphere and from the industrial recycling system.  Ecobricks raise ecological consciousness and enable individuals, communities and companies to transition from plastic.

Ecobricking is a deep solution for your plastic.  First, plastic is an amazing material with incredible properties and it is a shame for it go to waste.  Second when plastic does ‘go to waste’; it contaminates the ecosystems that sustain us and our fellow species.  Third, Ecobricks embody regenerative principles that point us all in a healthy direction.

You see, essentially ecobricks enable folks, like you and I, to put the potential problematic properties of plastic to good use.  Even better, the manual, hands on, and fundamentally local process of ecobricking gets us thinking.  The awareness that grows, puts us on a road towards to consuming and using plastic wisely.  In fact, ecobricking points us towards transcending plastic all together and getting back to ways of living that are in deep harmony with the cycles of life.
